Matteo Berrettini rindió un emotivo homenaje a la “leyenda” Stan Wawrinka después de su partido en el US Open y recordó la anécdota de la vez que perdió un set de entrenamiento ante el suizo y tuvo que comprarle una botella de vino.
Tras recibir una invitación de última hora para disputar su último Grand Slam en Flushing Meadows, el suizo, de 41 años y actualmente número 127 del mundo, se enfrentó al italiano, número 43 del ranking, por segundo Grand Slam consecutivo.
Wawrinka compitió de igual a igual con Berrettini durante los dos primeros sets, pero el campeón del US Open 2016 se quedó sin fuerzas y se vino abajo después de quedar dos sets por detrás. El italiano terminó imponiéndose por 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3) y 6-0.
Ambos tenistas también se midieron en la primera ronda de Wimbledon hace dos meses. Aquel encuentro se alargó hasta el quinto set, pero Berrettini volvió a salir vencedor.

Momentos después de poner fin a la carrera de Wawrinka en los torneos de Grand Slam, el italiano, de 30 años, dedicó un elegante mensaje al suizo, que se encuentra en retirada.
“Delighted to share the court against this legend of our sport once again. I’ve said it many times... I was a kid when I was watching him playing, winning Slams. It’s a dream coming true," Berrettini said.
"It’s crazy we never played against each other in our career, and then twice in a row in two Slams first round. You guys gave us an unbelievable atmosphere as he deserves. I’m happy for the win, and I’m honored to share the court with a great player like him.”
Berrettini: “We once bet a bottle of wine and I lost”
Después de rendir homenaje a Wawrinka, Berrettini también recordó la apuesta que perdió ante el suizo y que le obligó a comprarle una botella de vino al ganador de tres títulos de Grand Slam.
“We definitely have a good relationship. I also got him a bottle of wine once because I lost a set in Monaco, we were training. We bet a bottle of wine. I gave it to him. That’s why he’s smiling," the Italian added.

Berrettini se enfrentará al argentino Mariano Navone en la segunda ronda del US Open, después de que el tenista sudamericano sorprendiera a Novak Djokovic.
