Elina Svitolina aseguró estar "very happy" por haber disputado finalmente un partido oficial de dobles mixtos junto a su marido, Gael Monfils. La pareja, además, bromeó sobre su madrugadora participación en el US Open.
Svitolina y Monfils inauguraron el torneo de dobles mixtos del US Open, que reúne a varias de las grandes estrellas del circuito. Su partido contra Alexandra Eala y Felix Auger-Aliassime comenzó a las 10:00 horas.
El matrimonio resolvió el encuentro con autoridad y se impuso por 4-1 y 4-1 en apenas 40 minutos. Tras ceder el primer juego, encadenaron cinco consecutivos para tomar el control y cerraron el segundo set con otra racha de tres juegos seguidos.
Svitolina: "Very happy to finally play with Monfils"
Svitolina y Monfils ya habían manifestado en varias ocasiones su deseo de jugar juntos en dobles mixtos, aunque antes del US Open solo habían compartido pista en partidos de exhibición y eventos benéficos. Ahora, por fin, pudieron competir como pareja en un torneo oficial, en lo que será el último Grand Slam del francés, de 39 años.
“First of all very happy to play finally with Gael. It’s nice to share the court together. Super happy with the win. We were trying to be really focused. But also to have fun was the key today," declaró la ucraniana, de 31 años, en una entrevista a pie de pista.
Svitolina y Monfils bromean sobre el inicio a las 10:00
Monfils comenzó agradeciendo al público su presencia a primera hora de la mañana, antes de bromear sobre la presión que sintió al jugar junto a su esposa.
“Hi everybody. Thank you for being here at 10 a.m. Thank you so much. It’s a fun format. I really enjoy first time playing with my wife. I had massive pressure on my back," bromeó Monfils.
"I felt like I handled it good. But again, it’s different. We played. We won. Now let’s see for the next one."
Svitolina añadió: “It’s amazing. Really fun format. So many people as Gael mentioned at 10 a.m, it’s one of the earliest we played since Under 12’s. But super happy to actually win."
