El actual número siete del mundo, que no gana un Masters 1000 desde hace más de tres años, debutó en Ohio con una victoria sobre el argentino Trungelliti por 6-4 y 7-5. Pese al bache que atraviesa en su carrera, el ruso sigue siendo uno de los grandes especialistas de la gira sobre pista dura.
Después de su triunfo en segunda ronda, Medvedev analizó su actuación ante los micrófonos de Tennis Channel y mostró confianza en sus opciones en el torneo estadounidense.
Medvedev alcanza las 100 victorias en Masters 1000
El exnúmero uno del mundo, que en Cincinnati logró su victoria número 100 en un Masters 1000, tuvo que luchar tanto contra su rival como contra el calor y la humedad. "It was hard. The playing conditions are not easy either here or in Montreal. The ball flies a lot and you always have to get there well if you want to command the game. It wasn't my best match, but it wasn't my worst either. I managed to stay in the fight, save two set points, and in the end I'm happy with the way I played," declaró el jugador moscovita, de 30 años.
Medvedev también reflexionó sobre el declive que atraviesa en esta etapa de su carrera, aunque se mostró convencido de que puede volver a exhibir el nivel que le llevó a lo más alto del ranking: "If you go out in the first round, or if you lose the serve six times as happened to me against Botic (in Montreal) it means that there has been a drop. But also for this reason tennis is wonderful. I remember this year, before Dubai, I felt even worse than I felt before the tournament in Canada. Then I ended up playing one of my best tennis games in recent years. So, everything can change at any moment."
