La temporada 2026 de Ben Shelton ha estado marcada por numerosos éxitos, aunque también por algunos momentos complicados en los torneos en los que esperaba tener un mayor impacto.
El estadounidense, de 23 años, ya había conquistado tres títulos antes de llegar a Montreal, con trofeos sobre pista dura, tierra batida y hierba. Aun así, describió su temporada como una “complete roller coaster” después de caer en la primera ronda de Wimbledon. También se despidió en la segunda ronda de Roland Garros y solo había ganado un partido en sus cuatro primeros Masters 1000 del año.
Por ello, la defensa de su título en el Canadian Open adquiría una importancia especial. Shelton recuperó su mejor tenis y completó todo el torneo sin ceder un solo set. El estadounidense derrotó a Jenson Brooksby, Zizou Bergs, Joao Fonseca, Jakub Mensik y Learner Tien antes de imponerse a Brandon Nakashima por 6-3 y 7-6(4) en la final.
El número 6 del mundo se convirtió en el primer campeón del Canadian Open desde Novak Djokovic, en 2016, que gana el torneo sin perder un set. Además, revalidó el título conquistado en 2025 y se unió a Andre Agassi, Andy Murray, Djokovic y Rafael Nadal como los jugadores que han encadenado títulos en el Canadian Open desde el inicio de la era de los Masters 1000.
Para el exnúmero 1 del mundo Jim Courier, sin embargo, hubo un aspecto de la actuación de Shelton todavía más impresionante que el propio trofeo.
Courier detectó un gran cambio en el juego de Shelton
Courier considera que el tenis desplegado por Shelton en Montreal fue el mejor de toda su carrera hasta la fecha.
“I think without doubt it was the best tennis of his career,” Courier dijo en el pódcast Drop Shot.
“Those last three matches that he played, the unforced errors compared to the winners were wild.
He was just munching players.
It was kind of awesome to see him put it all together.
We know he works hard, and we have always known he is a great competitor.”
Shelton cerró sus tres últimos partidos con 62 golpes ganadores y 38 errores no forzados. Contra Mensik, en los cuartos de final, el zurdo firmó 18 winners y solo cometió tres errores no forzados en su victoria por 6-3 y 6-1.
A Courier le gustó especialmente la manera en la que el estadounidense construyó los puntos, en lugar de limitarse a intentar terminarlos lo antes posible.
“You never have to doubt that he is going to lay it all on the line out there, but the fact he was able to bring it all together and really punctuate it with that forehand down the line on match point, that was the perfect exclamation point for what he’s been doing,” afirmó.
“We know the serve is amazing, but to be able to work a point and get the right shot and sting it, when he was maybe a bit too trigger-happy a few times earlier in his career, but you really could see the maturity coming in.”
Courier también señaló lo que el ascenso de Shelton hasta el número 6 del mundo puede significar para el resto de la temporada.
“I think him being sixth in the rankings right now positions him well to be protected early in the draws and get deeper in there and challenge himself against the best of the best,” explicó el cuatro veces campeón de Grand Slam.
Con Jannik Sinner y Carlos Alcaraz ausentes en Cincinnati, Courier considera que jugadores como Shelton tienen una oportunidad para sacar provecho de la situación.
“He has got to continue to take advantage of those and build his belief in himself while at the same time building an aura about him that others will fear,” añadió Courier.
Shelton cree que un resultado puede cambiarlo todo
El propio Shelton reconoció, después de ganar en Montreal, que sus actuaciones en los grandes torneos habían sido decepcionantes antes de su triunfo canadiense.
“It hasn't been the best stretch for me at the big tournaments,” declaró Ben. “I've definitely had some big highlights this year with the titles won. And once I've got going in a tournament, it's tough to slow me down.”
El jugador de 23 años admitió que no había rendido al nivel deseado en los grandes acontecimientos, aunque subrayó que el tenis ofrece numerosas oportunidades para cambiar el rumbo de una temporada.
“For me, I know that just one match can kind of change everything,” afirmó Shelton. “So I think that's how I look at things, and it really does help me stay in the moment and be ready for when my opportunity does come up that I'm in the right mental space.”
El estadounidense también se mostró satisfecho por algo más que la victoria en la final. Consideró que su manera de jugar reflejó cuánto ha evolucionado su tenis.
“I thought tonight it was such a good display from me, the way that I moved on the court, the way I struck the ball, my serve and return,” explicó Shelton. “I thought I was versatile. I played all-court tennis.”
Su próximo desafío será el Cincinnati Open, donde alcanzó los cuartos de final en las dos temporadas anteriores. Después llegará el US Open, torneo en el que Shelton ya logró alcanzar las semifinales en una etapa anterior de su carrera.
