"It's amazing to be back on the court and feel good with my ankle. It's definitely been a frustrating year for how my body has felt. But the game was there. I played well", explicó el jugador de 27 años después del partido, tranquilizando a sus seguidores tras superar el problema físico que había encendido las alarmas.

Shapovalov sufrió la lesión durante la final de Los Cabos, una especie de esguince que le llevó a disputar el torneo de Montreal —ante su público— lejos de su mejor estado físico. En la primera ronda, frente al estadounidense Svajda, se retiró durante el tercer set, cuando perdía por 3-0. "I started to notice that other parts of the body were also affected. I felt muscle tension, discomfort in the hamstrings, quadriceps and even the knee. All this was a consequence of having compensated for the pain in my ankle," había explicado.
"Now I feel good on the court, so I'm very happy. The conditions are very different. It's much faster here than in Montreal and I prefer fast conditions. For me, adaptation is easier this way," señaló Denis, que ya espera el desafío de segunda ronda contra el español Rafael Jodar, el tenista del momento tras alcanzar la final en Washington y las semifinales en Canadá. El español podría no estar al cien por cien debido al cansancio acumulado y, en ese caso, el canadiense intentará dar la sorpresa.
La final de Los Cabos devolvió, sin duda, la confianza al jugador de 27 años: "It was a fantastic week. In the end, however, I ran out of energy in the final and some problems arose. Then I had to change tournaments in a hurry to go to Montreal. I probably shouldn't have participated in that tournament, considering my physical condition, but I tried to give my best for the home fans,” concluyó.
